A public holiday, national holiday or legal holiday is a holiday generally established by law and is usually a non-working day during the year. This page contains public holidays sorted by years. Holiday dates may be change from time to time, so please check back regularly for updates. Scroll down to view the national holidays and short description of each holiday.- According to Hong Kong laws, when a designated public holiday falls on a Sunday or on the same day of another holiday, the immediate following weekday would be a public holiday.
- If either Lunar (Chinese) New Year Day, the second day of Lunar New Year or the third day of Lunar New Year falls on a Sunday, the fourth day of Lunar New Year is designated as a statutory and general holiday in substitution.
- Public holidays in Hong Kong are provided for by legislation, namely the General Holidays Ordinance. However, this law is further clarified by the Employment Ordinance, since the General Holidays Ordinance only guarantees that public holidays be…
“…kept as a holiday by all banks, educational establishments, public offices and Government departments.”
- To extend public holidays to employees of privately owned businesses and entities, the Employment Ordinance states in Section 39 that,
“An employee shall be granted a statutory holiday by his employer on each of the following days…”
